Obsidian Security Welcomes Investor Promod Haque and Norwest Venture Partners

HASAN IMAM

We are excited to welcome Promod Haque, Senior Managing Partner at Norwest Venture Partners, as an investor in Obsidian. Promod brings valued perspective, with 31 years of venture experience and more than 70 investments including FireEye, Palerra, and Shape Security. He joins existing investors Asheem Chandna and Sarah Guo from Greylock Partners, Gaurav Garg from Wing Venture Capital and Tyson Clark from Google Ventures.

Obsidian is on a mission to bring security and compliance to business-critical SaaS applications. Despite systems of record having moved to the cloud decades ago, security teams still do not have the resources they need to mitigate threats and reduce enterprise risk in their SaaS environments. Existing security solutions are designed to create consistent employee experiences and control unsanctioned application usage, but they are unable to see activity within and across SaaS applications. To provide proper security, companies need to look beyond authentication and proxies – a new paradigm is needed.

Obsidian offers a differentiated approach that covers the sizable gaps in security and compliance of SaaS. By analyzing application state data across tenants, we’re able to detect over-privilege, misconfigurations, and account compromise so that companies can proactively harden their security posture and mitigate threats before exfiltration. Obsidian comes ready with expert rulesets and delivers value in minutes, without agents to deploy or custom rules required.

“As I talked to CISOs it became evident that proxy-based solutions like CASBs and SWGs can’t address all attack vectors for SaaS. Obsidian is on target to deliver the industry’s first comprehensive SaaS security and compliance solution that protects customers from account compromise early in the kill chain while simultaneously reducing enterprise risk,” said Promod Haque, Senior Managing Partner, Norwest Venture Partners. “I am confident that the leadership team at Obsidian has the right blend of skills to pioneer a new category in SaaS security.”

We’re humbled that over 50 large and mid-sized companies share our vision and have put their trust in us. The journey is just beginning. Thank you to our customers, partners, and investors for your support. To learn more about how Obsidian completes your SaaS security stack, visit our website or send us a note.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Who is Promod Haque and what is his role with Obsidian Security?

Promod Haque is a Senior Managing Partner at Norwest Venture Partners with 31 years of venture investment experience and over 70 investments, including notable companies like FireEye, Palerra, and Shape Security. He recently joined as an investor in Obsidian Security, bringing valuable insights and strategic guidance to help drive the company's mission in SaaS security and compliance.

What makes Obsidian Security’s approach to SaaS security unique?

Obsidian Security takes a differentiated approach by deeply analyzing application state data across multiple tenants, which enables the detection of over-privilege, misconfigurations, and account compromise. Unlike proxy-based solutions, Obsidian provides comprehensive visibility and threat detection within and across SaaS applications, enabling organizations to proactively strengthen security posture and reduce risk without complex deployment requirements.

Why are traditional security solutions like CASBs and SWGs not enough for SaaS security?

Traditional solutions such as CASBs (Cloud Access Security Brokers) and SWGs (Secure Web Gateways) focus on authentication and controlling unsanctioned applications, but they lack visibility into activity and potential threats within SaaS applications themselves. As a result, these solutions cannot adequately detect or prevent identity- and configuration-based threats unique to SaaS environments, leaving significant security gaps.

How quickly can organizations see value after deploying Obsidian Security?

Organizations can start realizing value from Obsidian Security in just minutes, as the platform comes pre-configured with expert rulesets and does not require the deployment of agents or the creation of custom rules. This rapid time-to-value allows security teams to immediately enhance their SaaS security and compliance posture.
